Admittedly, I haven’t put much effort into this project over the last few weeks. I was heavily focused on Specialising and Exhibiting, but I am now working on this. My idea is to look at various peoples exposure to Caribbean sound. Those being myself, my mother and my brother in law. It will be told in an informal fashion, something like the outro to Kanye West’s 2004 album The College Dropout, ‘Last Call’.

“The album ends with an 8-minute autobiographical monologue that follows the song, where Kanye tells the story of how he got involved in the music industry and got a record deal.” (Genius)

During this monologue, Kanye reiterates things that people said to him, but then has the person say it themself. Im planning on replicating it in some way when I share information in my audio paper.

The idea came as I was on a bus going through my songs on Spotify. (Only if you want me to – Ooklah the Moc) A song had caught my attention and made me think deeply about Caribbean sound. Roots reggae, Lovers rock, Dancehall. Things within that realm. Although roots reggae is about 70 years old, the album I discovered was from the 2000s around the time I was born. Lovers rock is from my mothers time, back in the 70s-80s and Dancehall is my brothers specialisation. I want to look into these three genres and see the correlations, research and discuss them, and ultimately create a sound paper that looks at my and my families experiences with them.
