Making the score.

Monday 6th November

This week, I am beginning to combine my projects.

I decided to look at some Ableton features I never used before. When I was at the studio with Aparna, I discovered the samples tab which has some really diverse sounds. On the way home from that session, I decided to record the sound of the train stopping at the station. For some reason I was thinking a lot about The Warriors, the popular movie from 1979, but more so the 2005 video game and its synths and the train/ public transport motif seen within.

I searched through my sound library and found the grooves section that essentially gives you some keys to modulate, in particular the Reggaeton loose accent 16th. Over that I put the Galleon Pianola which had like a unusual sound to it.

I then used swing 8ths 71 in combination with the swell brass which gave me an underlying heartbeat sound.

The train recording was cut and edited with jimis feedback guitar to give it a more eerie unsettling sound.

I wanted more layers so I got my midi keyboard and recorded a few notes using the synth note rain D# for a real overbearing ‘oh no’ type of sound when there are revelations in the scene.

The last 2 things I added was the sci-fi esque ‘cruiser strings’ for a very suspenseful sound, heavily influenced by the warriors. Lastly, I added the off-world strings for a ‘eureka’ type feeling to occur when she discovers the old mans safe code. I experimented with it and decided to have it play out a few times in different keys as I believe it sounds and looks better that way.

For my first time making a score I believe I did well, however I will still try to make improvements where possible as we get closer to the deadline.
