everything/nothing.

Incompletenoise/everythingnothing is a 2 part piece that plays simultaneously together. It was created in a studio session with 2 friends which was initially set up to make music and create a completely different project.

It has a lot of unknown aspects; ‘everything is random and nothing makes sense’, as we were just messing with microphones, synths and keyboards while letting it record. I took the recording home and was just going to keep it unedited and talk over it in the style of my first year project ‘thought artist’, but I decided to take a different approach by breaking it down and repurposing elements of the recording into a new layer.

Part one is ‘everything/nothing’. It is the original recording comprised of the studio recordings, with a few effects scattered here and there. Part two is ‘incomplete noise’. It is made up of small sections of the instruments from the session, time stretched and edited with effects. There is no special techniques used. And most of the effects I used were random. The two friends of mine had probably never even been to a studio before.

It was mainly inspired by a session I ran alongside Lou and Jose where we showed insights students some modulation through Ableton. I wouldn’t call it a true sequel to ‘thought artist’, but I would call it a progression. I’m not sure what I want it to achieve. Maybe looking back at it in the third year will give me answers as the first year project has done for this one.
